Global ride-sharing platform DiDi is expanding its Australian services with the rollout of extensive driver and rider recruitment programs in anticipation of the official launch of DiDi Express, its core ride-hailing service, in Newcastle.

DiDi Express will be launched in Newcastle on 11 March. Operating currently in Melbourne and Geelong, DiDi says it aims to provide affordable, convenient and safe on-demand mobility options tailored to the Australian market, through the joining of local and global operational and engineering teams.

The company says it also believes providing competitive income to its driver community is crucial to fulfilling its commitment to local economic growth.

DiDi has announced it will provide Newcastle users with generous welcome packages. Riders who sign up before 11 March will receive a welcome voucher pack worth $50. During the launch period, for trips starting in DiDi’s Newcastle operating area, riders will receive up to 50% off two rides a day (excludes Saturdays), plus two $20 value free rides every DiDiDay.

Driver-partners who sign-up before launch will get a promotional 0% services fee for the first six weeks, meaning they would earn 100% of every fare. Driver-partners who sign up after launch will enjoy DiDi’s standard service fee of 5%, which the company claims is substantially lower than the Australian industry standard.

DiDi also says driver-partners will also get a range of other incentives such as a $100 reward for completing their first 10 trips, a $100 reward for referring new driver-partners and a $20 reward for introducing new riders to DiDi.

Newcastle is the first city in New South Wales where DiDi will operate.

“With a vibrant university student community, a packed calendar of cultural and sporting events and a visionary Smart City Strategy, Newcastle is an ideal place to launch DiDi in NSW. DiDi is excited to serve over 600,000 people in the area stretching from Newcastle Airport to the bottom of Lake Macquarie,” the company said.

Douglas Toy, marketing manager for DiDi Australia, said: “DiDi aims to provide Novocastrians with affordable rides so that they can make the most of Newcastle’s beaches, festivals and events. We are excited to start operating in Newcastle, our first city in NSW, where we aim to help Novocastrians spend less and live more.”
