Silvia Wulf, entrepreneur and creator of Physeek, an app designed to help people meet activity buddies, says that one of the biggest reasons why people don’t exercise is boredom.
With younger generations starting to want a more personalised, pick-and-choose style of exercise, Wulf noted that "many are fleeing the gym and looking for new options", and added: "Exercise can get boring. There’s only so many times you can do the same circuit or exercise on the treadmill without getting bored and wanting a change".
When asked for her top tips on how to avoid boredom while exercising, Wulf provided four tips:
- First, connect with an activity buddy or buddies to undertake different exercise activities with. Try and create a broad network of activity buddies to ensure you have a good network of people with whom to do different things.
- Change your fitness regime to include a mix of different activities or apparatus each week, ie, walk up a mountain, ride a bike somewhere for a picnic, play a game of tennis or work out on equipment you seldom use.
- Treat yourself to a new item of sports wear or training gear every so often. We all like to feel good about ourselves and showing off a new pair of tights or colourful sneakers is all part of the process.
- Attend group classes or boot camps every now and then. They are great fun and get you working hard The group pressure to keep up ensures you get the most of the session.
Wulf continued: “Physeek lets you connect with other exercise minded people and get a new training buddy. And with that buddy, you can do whatever kind of exercise you want – no constraints around class times or equipment, just total freedom.”
Then there's the fact that "meeting people online in order to exercise with them gives people the opportunity to find something outside the bounds of a normal gym".
Here, Wulf said: “If you’re with someone you’re comfortable with, it’s easier to get outside your comfort zone and really experiment with how you exercise. It doesn’t feel so silly doing yoga at 6 pm in the park if you’re doing it with someone.
“You are more inclined to engage in other activities such as walking, riding and hiking, if you have someone to do these activities with. This then keeps you active and moving which is a good thing. Having someone to undertake activities with keeps you interested in exercise.
“I created Physeek because I couldn’t find anyone at my gym to train with. In my experience that’s pretty typical – a lot of people go to the gym to do their exercise and then leave. They don’t want to socialise. Exercise and health should be accessible to everyone.
“Fitness and exercise are changing, and Physeek is ahead of the curve. We’re about forming connections and allowing people to have fun with exercise and importantly keep exercising”, Wulf concluded.
Physeek is an App which connects people based on activity interests. Users can find other people with similar interests within specific geographic locations and connect with them. It is free and can be downloaded via Google Play and the Apple App Store.
