A new project on crowdfunding site Indiegogo to either turn your mechanical watch into a smartwatch with a new band, or to sell you a mechanical watch that has a smartwatch built into its band, has been funded.
The project, by a company called Kairos, sought US $50,000, and has already raised US $73,849 at time of publication.
You can see a video embedded below of the various watch bands and the mechanical Kairos watch with smart band - and you can see the Indiegogo page for the funded project here.
At the Indiegogo page, Kairos notes that: ‘Watches express who you are’, and that the ‘Kairos T-band allows you to wear your favorite wristwatch while enjoying all the benefits a smartwatch can bring.’
Kairos says that ‘We are now seeing more and more app support where you can control music, turn speech to text, GPS navigation, and also remote starting your vehicle. More recently a lot of attention has been given to the health benefits of a wearable device. The ability to constantly measure your heart rate, sweat, stress levels, etc., can help analyze your body in a manner we have never seen before.’
The watch uses ‘Kairos OS’, which looks like it is very similar to Android Wear in various ways, but at its FAQ page https://kairoswatches.com/faq/ says: ‘Kairos OS is made so that the watch can be compatible with Android, iOS and Windows Phone. We will also have SDKs for third party developers. BB 10 is not official yet, but we are looking into it.’
Kairos Watches also say on its site that: ‘Kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment (the supreme moment)’.
The company also has a jab at Samsung and LG when it says ‘Not everyone is a techie and may not want to wear a watch with the same brand that makes refrigerators. The solution? Kairos T-band!’
However, that’s not all. At the Kairos Watches site, the company is also offering pre-orders on a hybrid mechanical/digital smart watch that has both an analogue, mechanical face that has a transparent display screen layered on top that can display the kind of information you expect from a smart watch - we have a video of that watch embedded below, too.
So, the Apple Watch - which still looks like it will be the non-mechanical best smart watch of them all - has even more competition before launch.
The Smart Watch wars have barely begun, and already they are in full swing!
