Although users of Sydney’s public buses haven’t had to wonder when the bus is coming since the introduction of bus stop numbers that could be texted to 0488 TXT BUS, which is still a great option for those who don’t have access to or don’t want to use data, this information is now even easier to access.
Yes, this information has finally been made available to developers, who have added it to their iPhone and Android public transport aps, giving real-time info within the app itself so you know when the bus is due – not just when the timetable says it’s supposed to be there.
As a regular user of the bus stop number texting service to reliably know exactly when the next bus is due, and how many minutes away it really is, I had been wondering when this info would arrive in Tripview, my favourite transit app, alongside other apps too.
Well, thanks to news from the NSW Department of Transport, its great technical people and clever smartphone app developers, it has finally happened, with that data available in TripView, Arrivo and the free TripGo, with Arrivo an Android only app while TripView and TripGo are available on iOS and Android in free (lite) or paid versions.
Private buses aren’t yet part of the system but are reported to be coming online in mid 2013.
Public buses with real-time info are those in Sydney’s CDB, the eastern suburbs, the inner west, southern suburbs, north western suburbs, the northern beaches and lower north shore, with expansion to come.
So, if you want to see real-time information on when the next bus is due, you have an iPhone or Android and you’re in a serviced area, what are you waiting for?
