Google gets kids doodling

Google is asking young artists to 'get doodling' for the love of soccer, giving Aussie kids the chance to design a Google logo for a day.

Google today announced an new international initiative for young people called "Doodle 4 Google - I Love Soccer". The competition invites 4 to 17 year olds from around the world to design their own Google logo inspired by the topic "I love soccer", in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup. The winning Doodle will be displayed internationally on the Google homepage for one day on July 11th 2010, to celebrate the FIFA World Cup Final. This is the first ever international Doodle 4 Google competition.

The Doodle 4 Google competition is open to children and teenagers in Australia aged between 4 and 17 years. Young artists will be challenged to create an image around their love of soccer that is independent from any specific team they support.

Submitted Doodles will be judged on artistic merit, creativity and how well the entrant expresses their love of soccer in the title and supporting statement. The contest has two levels: national and international. From the Australian submissions, Google employees from Australia will select the top 10 Doodles, which will then be put to a public vote to decide the country's winner. The national winning doodle will be displayed on the Google Australia homepage for 24 hours on 13 June 2010.

The national winner will be entered automatically into the global competition, in which people from around the world will vote for their overall favourite doodle. The overall winning design will be displayed on the Google homepage of all the participating countries for 24 hours in July 2010. There are also apparently some "amazing" prizes on offer for the winner and runner up.

To enter the contest, Doodles can be sent to Doodle 4 Google, PO Box 7005, Wetherill Park, NSW 1851. It seems, oddly, that submissions will only be taken via post as opposed to online.

This is the third time young people from across Australia have had the chance to design their own Google Doodle.
