New router firmware to boost security for home users

By

Cybersecurity company Untangle has released open source firmware for consumer Wi-Fi routers that makes it possible to have plenty of visibility into traffic and also control it.

Known as NG Firewall, the firmware was announced at the Def Con held in Las Vegas last week.

The firmware is available for download from the company's website, with the first router supported being the Asus AC3100 RT-AC88U.

According to the company, the new firmware is aimed at giving small businesses and home users the same level of security that big companies, which have dedicated IT staff, can have.

Unlike consumer hardware, which has changed a great deal in design and functionality, the software in a router hasn't changed much over the years, leading to the development of firmware distributions like DD-WRT, OpenWRT, and Tomato to provide internet connectivity and basic routing like port forwarding, in some cases VPN, and some basic QoS.

In the same time, business firewalls have gone through massive changes to cope with the complexities of safely connecting a local network to the Internet.

Untangle has released NG Firewall to plug this gap.

NG Firewall allows users to create rules for managing access to websites, applications, and content based on criteria like device, user, time of day, day of week and more. Users can see the effect of those rules through drill-down reports that can be monitored via the 360° Dashboard, a single pane of glass view into what’s happening on the network.

The company has created a guide for installing the firmware on the Asus AC3100 RT-AC88U and also a rundown of the features available and the benefits of using its firmware.
