A puzzle of Olympic proportions

This puzzle requires no mathematical ability at all.  All that's needed is a gift for trivia or some very good research skills.

Being an Olympic year, I thought I might set you all a target to dig up some obscure Olympic trivia.  Here we go.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympic games (for which I believe the loans are still being repaid), something occurred that has not happened at any other Olympic games before or since.

What was so unique about this event?  Note that there may be more than one answer, but the one I have is (I believe) the most important and significant.  Another note - I doubt very much if you'll be able to use your favourite search engine to figure this one out for you.

Good luck!  Please submit answers in the comments below as usual.
