Telstra has been awarded Australia’s Best in Test mobile network 'all over again' Featured

The Commercial Engineering Executive at Telstra, Sri Amirthalingam has published a post at the Telstra Exchange, winning “not just Best in Test overall but also winning all three categories for Voice, Data and Crowd-Sourced Testing”.

Telstra says it wants to make “connectivity as simple as possible” for its customers, noting that “when you’re with us, we’re with you”.

Amirthalingam notes in the blog post that we we all pull our smartphones out of our pockets to make a call, send a photo or stream a game, it just works, and that Telstra works “tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that’s the case, and our work has paid off, winning us the title of Australia’s best mobile network once again”.

Telstra reminds us that “the 2020 umlaut (formerly P3) Australian Mobile Network Benchmark" is a direct continuation of the company’s annual mobile network benchmarking in Australia since 2014.

“These aren’t simple tests, either: it’s a rigorous series of real-world exercises conducted over several months that puts each network in the country through their paces to see which is best.

“It combines crowd-sourced smartphone app data together with walk and drive survey testing of smartphone voice and data along over 32,000 km of measuring distance, accounting for 74 per cent of the total Australian population, and with the addition of the crowd-sourced app data including an area of country where 98.8% of the population resides”.

Amirthalingam said: “What this year’s tests found is that we’ve got it where it counts with a clean sweep, winning not just Best in Test overall but also winning all three categories for Voice, Data and Crowd-Sourced Testing.

“While the test results don’t specifically call out 5G in isolation, the survey uses 5G-enabled devices. Our Best in Test and Data wins owe much to our vastly greater 5G coverage footprint, which is underpinned by more than double the number of 5G sites compared to our nearest competitor.

“These latest of accolades sit alongside similar wins in the umlaut/P3 testing in previous years, as well as top ranking in separate mobile network performance comparisons published this year by other external bench markers.”

Showcasing Telstra’s investments, Amirthalingam added: “We’ve committed billions of dollars into building our superior and reliable mobile network, and just this year brought forward $500 million planned for the second half of FY21 into calendar year 2020 to accelerate the rollout of our incredible 5G.

“We’re rolling out more 5G as you read this – we already have 5G in selected areas of more than 60 cities and regional towns, and by June next year our 5G will have reached 75% of the Australian population.

“We’re still working hard to make sure our customers get coverage where they need it most, even in truly remote areas through our significant investment in the Mobile Black Spot Program, which is funded in partnership with state and federal governments.

“For you, this win means you can continue to trust our network to be the one you can rely on. The one that will not only give you coverage and service for the easy stuff, but the one you can use for your most data-intensive tasks.

“Tasks like running a mobile office you’ve set up at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic; or like downloading a great new game to play on your smartphone or tablet, or even just firing up a HD movie stream over the holidays to watch with your family

“It’s the network that allows you to do more in more places, and our team will keep up the work so you can continue to depend on it as you do each day”, Amirthalingam concluded.
