Kogan Mobile’s cunning $tunt: $4.90 for 14GB with unltd calls and text


You have to be a new customer to Kogan Mobile, and the deal is just for 30 days, but it’s a clever stunt to tempt switchers to taste test Kogan Mobile.

Kogan, the e-tail rogue who has taken on Aussie retail shoguns like Harvey Norman and its upper middle bogan CEO Gerry Harvey, along with contenders like JB Hi-Fi and others, has launched his mobile division where no mobile division has gone before.

Yep, that’s right, Kogan is setting the price pace for pre-paid, but as with all good stunts, it’s only for a limited time.

On top of that, the deal doesn’t apply to current Kogan Mobile customers, but the deal does seek out ‘price conscious mobile customers’ who are clearly existing pre-paid customers of other networks and companies with the ‘new value benchmark for mobile access in Australia.’

The deal is simple: new customers to Kogan have until May 31 to sign up to any of Kogan Mobile’s plans for $4.90, plans which last for 30 days (unlike many pre-paid competitors).

All plans come with unlimited calls and text to standard numbers in Australia, so that means you can choose the 1GB, 5GB, 10GB or 14GB plans and just pay $4.90 for the first 30 days, after which the standard recharge rate will apply.

Those plans are normally priced at $16.95 per 30 days, $29.90, $36.90 and $49.90 per 30 days respectively.

Of course, you could choose the 14GB plan with unlimited calls for the first 30 days, and then recharge to whichever plan suits you thereafter seeing as the ultra-affordable $4.90 plan will no longer apply, and that may well be what many people decide to do.

Apple iPhone owners who take up the offer will find very handily find visual voicemail is available to them, too - something only Vodafone and post-paid Telstra customers also have access to. This is because Kogan Mobile is powered by the Vodafone Australia network, and Kogan Mobile has access to Vodafone's visual voicemail infrastructure. 

David Shafer, Executive Director at Kogan Mobile, naturally talked up the offer and said that the new offering ‘represents an opportunity for Australians that are looking for affordable mobile data to try out a trusted network.’

Shafer shafted the competition by stating: “We’re using our smartphones more everyday. Whether we’re texting, calling, or streaming and downloading content, Australians are relying on our phones, and the last thing we want to worry about is bill shock at the end of the month.

“Kogan Mobile provides a low-cost way for Aussies to remove the worry caused by mobile phone bills - with unlimited national talk and text, and a huge data allowance, there is no need to risk spending more than you were expecting.

“Best of all, for $4.90, there is now an easy and inexpensive way for everybody to see why hundreds of thousands of Australians are making the switch to Kogan Mobile.”

Naturally, there are the standard disclaimers, which are as follows: “Valid for new Kogan Mobile customers only. Personal use only. Discount available on Kogan Prepaid Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large 30 day recharge purchased before 11:59PM AEST 31/05/17. Discount does not apply to subsequent recharges. Discount will be applied at checkout. Not available for commercial or resale purposes. Discount cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotional offers. Limit 1 per customer. Not transferable and not redeemable for cash.”
