Despite the downpour on Tuesday, Vodafone reports data usage on its mobile network had a massive downpour of a download in volume, too, increasing "by approximately 47% compared to Cup Day in 2017".
We're told this is "a steady increase in data usage during the 2017 Melbourne Cup, which was up 46% compared to Cup Day in 2016".
Of course, that's not all, with the company's network also seeing "a significant jump in data usage during Derby Day, with a 54% increase compared to Derby Day in 2017".
Well, it total, Vodafone reports that "racegoers at this year’s Derby Day and Melbourne Cup events used a combined 52% more data than those who attended last year’s events".
In addition, this year’s crowd at Derby Day "spent more time chatting on the phone than last year, with an 18% increase in calls".
Meanwhile, 2018 Melbourne Cup crowds seemed "more focused on avoiding the rain than chatting, with only an 8% increase in calls since last year".
Kevin Biles, Vodafone regional manager for Victoria, said: "The rise of live streaming and sharing video content means the experience of being at the Cup is no longer reserved for those on the ground at Flemington.
"Melbourne Cup Day was the leader during last year’s carnival, with regards to data usage. This year the weather seemed to keep racegoers away for a little longer allowing Derby Day to overtake in the data race, with attendees using 3% more data than those who attended Melbourne Cup.
"A day at the races has really changed over recent years with smartphones taking a pivotal role in so many elements of the day. Our customers are opting more and more to use mobile betting applications over traditional betting methods. Or using an on-demand ride sharing service over flagging down a cab. All this is contributing to the increases in data usage we are seeing year on year.
"Social sharing continues to fuel data usage on our mobile network. Live streaming sessions in particular have driven up data usage numbers over recent years as more customers opt to share their experiences in real time."
