Data consumption by users of the national broadband network has risen to an average of 213GB per month, the NBN Co's chief technology officer Ray Owen claims.

In a speech to the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, Owen said this was a rise of more than seven-fold in the period from 2012 to 2108.

Dr Owen said 4.4 million premises had been activated and the network was carrying about 30 petabytes of data every day, the equivalent of about 15 trillion pages of printed text.

Half of all the data consumed was being taken up by the top 14% of users, Owen said, adding that the top 1% each used about 1TB per month.

He said the heaviest use was 20TB per month, the equivalent of about 5000 high-definition films.

“We are seeing real surges in demand on the NBN Co network at about 3pm to 4pm when children come home from school and again in the evening between 8pm to 9pm when people are relaxing and starting to stream videos," Dr Owen told the audience.

“While our current network is coping well despite the rapidly increasing usage, we are already working towards making sure the network will be able to meet the demands of the future as well.

“We have already deployed DOCSIS 3.1 on our HFC network to help provide greater capacity and are working towards enabling G.Fast capability on our fibre-to-the-curb network as well.”

About half of peak-time usage was for real-time entertainment – typically video streaming – with about 30% coming from Web browsing, and the remainder from VPN usage and file-sharing.
