Home Telecoms & NBN Nokia: Net traffic doubling in two years, 66x in 2020 than in 2005

IoT data, ultra high definition video streaming and more will see a doubling of Internet traffic over the next two years, it has been claimed.

Telco news site Total Telecom spoke to Nokia chief executive for the UK and Ireland, Cormac Whelan, at a Connected Ireland event last week.

He told Total Telecom: "We are the zettabyte generation. What is a zettabyte? If expressed in storage, it is enough information to fill about 1000 data centres, which would cover an area equivalent to 20% of Manhattan."

Whelan further told the publication that Nokia is "expecting globally that traffic will more than double and will reach two zettabytes per year in two years' time, an increase of fivefold over the past five years. Global Internet traffic will be equivalent to 66 times the volume of the entire Internet in 2005".

In terms of online video, this would mean 80% of "all IP traffic within three years", which is something iTWire is helping to happen as much as possible with a range of regular videos, comprising video interviews, videos of media events and more.

Whelan told Total Telecom that "It would take a single person more than five million years to watch the amount of video that will cross global IP networks each month. Of course, this content will rely on broadband for delivery to homes and mobile devices".

Naturally, Nokia stands ready to help telcos with the right equipment to make the delivery of all this data as seamless as possible.
