Telework report released, AMTA plans major study

By
The Australian Telework Advisory Committee has concluded that broader take-up of telework could expand the labour market during a period of high employment to fill skills gaps, improve employment opportunities for people who may otherwise be excluded from the workforce and facilitate greater workforce participation in line with the Government's Welfare to Work policies.

Communications minister, senator Helen Coonan, welcomed the release of the report saying: " "The Australian Government places great importance on strategies that address the ageing of the workforce and skill shortages, as well as the economic revitalisation of rural and regional areas." However she gave no indication of what action if any the Government planned to take on the report.

The CEO of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, Chris Althaus, said the report's findings that mobile phones were helping to facilitate increased workforce participation through greater access and connectivity were of great interest to the industry adding "our industry is partnering the Australian National University in a major new research project into the contribution of mobiles to the work/life balance."

The three year project will involve collaboration with a team of sociologists, headed by ANU professor Judy Wajcmany, It will look at the impact of the mobile phone on the work/life balance and at the role of mobiles in how work and family activities are negotiated and organised.
