Micron, Seagate team up for enterprise flash

An agreement between Micron Technology and Seagate Technology gives the chipmaker a route into the enterprise market, while the storage vendor gains a strategic supply of NAND flash memory.

The Micron/Seagate strategic agreement initially relates to the supply of NAND flash memory, but the two companies see potential for collaboration on enterprise storage solutions.

"This agreement enables Seagate to secure a strategic supply of NAND flash memory and enables collaboration on future products and technologies," said Seagate executive vice president of electronics solutions Phil Brace.

"Our companies are leaders in the storage industry, and in working together we build on that success."

Micron vice president of storage Darren Thomas said "The collaboration will assure both Seagate and Micron target the growing enterprise flash market with industry-leading offerings across both of our product portfolios.

"The relationship provides Micron access to enterprise drive technology and platforms, expanding our portfolio and accelerating our push into the enterprise market segment."

News of the arrangement was welcomed by the companies' customers.

"As two of our key partners, we look forward to the benefits of this Micron and Seagate collaboration in future NAND flash-based storage technologies," said EMC president of global product operations Mike Kerouac.

And HP senior vice president for EG global supply chain Trevor Schick said "The strategic agreement between Micron and Seagate promises to deliver new and innovative flash-based storage solutions."
