News Corp firm to create blacklist for online ads

A News Corporation company has plans to create a database of sites that are deemed unsuitable for online advertisers so that companies can avoid placing ads on such sites.

Social-media news agency Storyful will share information about sites that host fake news or extremist content with advertisers to ensure they can prevent their content appearing there, The Australian reported on Thursday.

Google has lost a number of advertisers after videos of their products appeared on YouTube videos that contained extremist, sexist and racist material.

And Facebook has been found to have hosted numerous fake news stories and also recently allowed a murder to be broadcast live.

The report said the British advertising company WPP's GroupM and PR company Weber Shandwick would be first to use Storyful's services.

It added that News Corporation would join hands with measurement firm Moat, and the City University of New York School of Journalism to list offenders.

The service would be free at first, but Storyful also plans a paid service that will assist advertisers in deciding where they should market their products online.
