“Usability is as important to us as cutting-edge technology,” says founder Robert Finkeldey. “WhoCanDo was built from scratch to avoid making any compromises on user experience and to enable the integration of new ideas, concepts and technologies to continuously enhance the benefits for our members. And we will continue to extend our innovation network and hire people with great ideas. For example, if you are an experienced php programmer and think you can contribute to one of the most exciting systems in Australia, then please give me a ring.”
No surprise that WhoCanDo.com.au is already hosting the biggest ever online reverse auction for services in Australia: $150,000 for adding a second storey to a residential building. To set this auction into perspective, eBay Australia launched in 1999 and the most expensive product sold to date was a Holden Monaro for $187,600 (according to eBay’s fact sheet). “One of the reasons is that with services auctions the size doesn’t matter as much because in contrast to product auctions, you typically do not send money in faith before you receive anything.” says Finkeldey.
$150,000 is just the tip of the iceberg – there have been several large auctions on WhoCanDo: a re-roofing job for $12,000, a kitchen upgrade for $8,000, and so forth. This gives an idea of the market potential of WhoCanDo. Finkeldey says, “we wouldn’t be surprised to see auctions in excess of a million dollars in the near future with more and more users discovering WhoCanDo. However, jobs do not have to be big to leverage the advantages of the system – jobs to date range from $50 (such as cleaning services) to $150,000.”
