Tenda is a global brand, launched in China in 1999, applying its own research and development to deliver smart, quality network products. The company expanded to Australia in time for Christmas 2018, releasing mesh Wi-Fi systems.
With the TEF1109P-8 desktop switch Tenda has brought its smarts and design to fixed Ethernet in the form of a nine port / eight port PoE desktop switch.
A desktop switch like this is essential for connecting devices to your network where you do not otherwise have Ethernet ports available, be they wall sockets or in your router. You would want to do this if you have devices that don’t support Wi-Fi, or you want the higher robustness of Ethernet, or maybe you don’t have a Wi-Fi network.
In this regard, the Tenda TEF1109P-8 performs admirably, pushing packets solidly over its nine ports. The switch also supports VLANs so you can isolate network traffic to specific ports.
Of course, what helps set this switch apart from others is the inclusion of IEEE 802.3af/at PoE on eight ports. This means the sockets deliver power as well as data, for compatible devices - such as most IP cameras or VoIP handsets. You do not need a separate power cable or powerpoint for these; you can just plug them into the Tenda TEF1109P via an Ethernet cable and they are both powered on and online.
Like you would expect, installation is a breeze - plug the switch into power and into your network, then merely cable any device into it.
The switch is aesthetic and functional, doing exactly what it says it will without any fuss or failings. iTWire took a look at the switch and found it happily processed packet after packet moving large files and streaming media with ease.
