Discovery and STS-131 prepare to launch

By

The countdown for the space shuttle Discovery and its STS-131 crew began at 3 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time at the Kennedy Space Center for its April 5, 2010 launch to the International Space Station.

The liftoff for STS-131 is now scheduled from launch pad 39A at a time of 6:21:22 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), or 1021 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on April 5th.

The flight marks the 131st space shuttle flight and the 38th flight of Discovery. It also heralds the 33rd time a shuttle has traveled to the International Space Station.

With an early morning launch, the STS-131 also is the 35th night launch of a shuttle.

To see a panorama view of the space shuttle Discovery sitting on launch pad 39A in preparation for its flight into space, please go to the website STS-131 Pad 39A.

For additional information on the flight, please go to NASA Mission Summary and STS-131 Mission Information.

An interesting side story to the mission appears in the March 3, 2010 NASAspaceflight.com article 'STS-131: Discovery rolls out to Pad 39A - ET repaired following bird vandalism.'

The story about birds and the space shuttle Discovery continues on page two.

According to the article 'With rollover to Pad 39A is completed, further repairs will take place on the stack's External Tank (ET-135), following 'avian induced damage' to the tank's TPS (Thermal Protection System) foam.'

Birds had accessed the external tank (ET) and pecked off some of the Thermal Protection System (TPS) foam. Engineers were forced to repair the ET caused by the birds.

To view the launch on April 5, 2010, please go to NASA TV.
