Staying Strong Amidst Constant Cyber Threats

By AusCERT

VENDOR CONTRIBUTION: The last decade has seen a phenomenal rise in all forms of cyber related activity.

That activity ranges from mischievous individuals with access to seemingly unlimited resources, through to organised criminals who operate outside our state boundaries and with little to no accountability in their home countries.

No matter what organisation you’re part of, there are two elements that we all have in common:

1. Our organisations and assets are under constant attack.

2. We are better protected by sharing knowledge and working closely together.

The traditional approach of strong network borders and other technology solutions are no longer enough to combat these attacks. Rather, they need to play part of a larger, multi-layered protection strategy that includes early detection, good governance, training, CERT teams, and automated technology.

With every business at risk of cyber attacks, it is provident that organisations invest in early detection and implement good governance processes to limit the impact for when an event does occur — as they inevitably will. As many cyber-attacks start with a human victim, investing in the skills across your entire team, from operatives to executives, is extremely important. After all, sometimes it only takes that one person from operations to accidentally open an email and your whole business is at risk!

Along with investing in staff training and communication, it’s critical to have robust (and tested) response plans for when an incident does occur. This is to reduce the impact and minimise any additional fallout, such as reputation damage. Finally, strategic investment in technology with capabilities to operate through automation (e.g. the ability for threat intelligence to flow to control points without the need for “cut and paste”) is essential in enabling the technical staff to pursue higher-value activities.

AusCERT is an independent not-for-profit Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) assisting and actively helping protect organisations in the ANZ Pacific region by delivering high quality cyber intelligence and supporting members during incidents. Over recent years, AusCERT has worked hard to create communities where the sharing of information can be carried out in a safe manner. They help educate through informal member meetups, formal training courses, and by hosting an annual Cyber Security conference.

AusCERT recently released their Year In Review publication which helps you stay up-to-date with the latest cyber security trends. It also provides insight into statistics from their large member services and is a credible source of information into the security landscape. Download the full publication or request some printed copies to share with your team today — after all, everyone needs to be part of the fight against cyber attacks.

LAYER 1 ENCRYPTION A KEY TO CYBER-SECURITY SOLUTION

Security requirements such as confidentiality, integrity and authentication have become mandatory in most industries.

Data encryption methods previously used only by military and intelligence services have become common practice in all data transfer networks across all platforms, in all industries where information is sensitive and vital (financial and government institutions, critical infrastructure, data centres, and service providers).

Get the full details on Layer-1 encryption solutions straight from PacketLight’s optical networks experts.

This white paper titled, “When 1% of the Light Equals 100% of the Information” is a must read for anyone within the fiber optics, cybersecurity or related industry sectors.
