Check Point protects Office 365 mail with SandBlast Cloud

By

Security vendor Check Point Software Technologies has announced SandBlast Cloud, an email filtering service for Office 365.

SandBlast Cloud is, as the second part of its name suggests, a cloud-based security service designed to protect Office 365 users from ransomware, advanced persistent threats (APTs) and other malware.

Email attachments are the primary means of distributing criminally-oriented malware, so it makes sense to identify malicious attachments before they reach their destination.

Check Point claims SandBlast Cloud has the highest malware catch rate in the industry, using threat emulation, threat extraction and other techniques to detect unknown malware and zero-day threats, as well as antivirus and URL reputation to detect known threats.

An interesting feature is that it initially delivers "safe, reconstructed versions of common document formats [Microsoft Office 2003-2013, Adobe PDF] in seconds" while attachments are being fully analysed, so information isn't delayed in transit.

"Enterprises are increasingly at risk of falling victim to a targeted email attack, and hackers' methods are constantly evolving, requiring enterprises to use proactive, sophisticated security measures in order to stay one step ahead of the latest threats," said Check Point's head of advanced threat prevention Nathan Shuchami.

"SandBlast Cloud brings one of the highest levels of protection in the industry to Office 365 email customers in a pure cloud solution that delivers safe content quickly, with full visibility and management through its cloud-based portal."

SandBlast Cloud will be available this winter. Prices have yet to be announced.
