Axis goes 4K for surveillance cameras

By

Network camera specialist Axis has announced its first model with 4K resolution.

Axis has announced its P14 series of network cameras, and the top-end model is the P1428-E featuring 4K resolution.

4K video is 3840 x 2160 pixels, and thus has four times the resolution of HDTV.

The high resolution allows overage of large areas such as car parks without losing detail

"An important factor in the development of this first Axis 4K camera was to bring the new industry standard into a product series intended to be implemented into practical use from day one," said director of product management Erik Frännlid.

"Initially, it is likely that most customers will be using a standard HDTV monitor. 4K makes it possible to enhance any portion of the screen without losing details.

"To manage bandwidth consumption, users can view the live video stream in HD 1080p and take advantage of 4K recordings for forensic purposes."

All P14 series cameras include a micro SD/SDHC/SDXC slot for local storage.

Other common features include Power over Ethernet, day and night operation, remote zoom and focus, and an integrated wall or ceiling mount. Additional mounting options are available.

The other models offer 1080p or 5MP resolution, and while all cameras in the range include built-in infrared lighting, two models feature Axis's OptimizedIR technology for adaptable IR illumination.

All models support the Axis Camera Application Platform for onboard applications, as well as Axis Camera Station and Axis Camera Companion for monitoring.

The P14 series should be available later this quarter. Prices will range from $648 to $1080 for the 4K P1428-E.
