Joomla! LDAP injection bug patched

A longstanding bug in the Joomla! content management system, which allowed the takeover of a site by exploiting a vulnerability in the login page, has been patched by the project.

Versions 1.5 through to 3.7.5 are affected but only if the systems are configured to use LDAP for authentication.

The Joomla! Security Centre issued version 3.8.0 of the popular CMS on Wednesday to fix the issue.

The bug was found by Dr Johannes Dahse who runs RIPS Technologies, a German firm that finds bugs in PHP code.

Dr Dahse discovered the vulnerability using his RIPS solution code analysis tool and informed the Joomla! team on 27 July. Two days later, the project confirmed that he was correct.

A patch was issued on 19 September and Dr Dahse released the details of the vulnerability on Wednesday.

He said the vulnerability was not a configuration flaw and an attacker did not need any elevated privileges to exploit it.

"By exploiting a vulnerability in the login page, an unprivileged remote attacker can efficiently extract all authentication credentials of the LDAP server that is used by the Joomla! installation," Dr Dahse said.

"These include the username and password of the super user, the Joomla! administrator.

"An attacker can then use the hijacked information to log in to the administrator control panel and to take over the Joomla! installation, as well as potentially the Web server, by uploading custom Joomla! extensions for remote code execution."
