Marcus Hutchins freed on bail, to face court on 14 Aug Featured

By

British software researcher Marcus Hutchins is set to face a hearing in the US district court in Wisconsin on 14 August, following his arrest and subsequent release on bail on charges of having written and distributed a banking trojan known as Kronos.

Hutchins will come up before Magistrate Judge Duffin at 10am that day (1am AEDT on 15 August).

He was arrested in Las Vegas on 2 August after he had boarded a plane to leave the country after attending the annual DEFCON conference.

Hutchins gained prominence in May when he registered a domain found within the code of the WannaCry ransomware and inadvertently stopped its spread.

While the chargesheet filed against Hutchins only accuses him of being involved in writing and spreading Kronon, the head of a security firm, Dave Aitel of Immunity, has alleged that he was involved in WannaCry himself.

Hutchins' bail, set at US$30,000, was raised through donations.

There was no time to raise sufficient funds last Friday so he was released on Monday.
