Home Security Vault 7: Latest release is an Android SMS intercept tool

WikiLeaks has released details of a CIA project called HighRise as part of its ongoing Vault 7 document dump, with the application in question being for Android exploitation.

The details date back to December 2013 and the tool can be used against Android versions 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to 4.3 (JellyBean).

HighRise can intercept SMS messages and redirect them to a Web server.

The application needs to be installed manually on an Android device and run once before it becomes a persistent application on the device and starts at every subsequent boot.

HighRise is packaged within an app known as TideCheck. The WikiLeaks post did not make it clear whether the app had been updated to work on more recent Android releases; the mobile operating system is now on version 7.x (Nougat).

The first time the tool is run, it asks for a password; the CIA chose "inshallah" as the password. It means "God willing" in Arabic.

This is the first Android application that has been detailed in the Vault 7 dump; all previous releases have been mostly about Windows tools, with a few being about Linux tools.
