New energy technologies that can make resources operations safer, more sustainable and help industry transition to a low-carbon future are the focus of the Asia Pacific Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC) which has kicked off in Brisbane.

The URTeC showcase has been developed by National Energy Resources Australia (NERA) — the country’s independent industry growth centre for energy resources — as a key feature of URTeC, the first unconventional resources technology conference held outside North America, being staged in Brisbane over two days from Monday.

A joint effort between the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), URTeC is hosting regional and global experts, regulators and prominent researchers to share their technical know-how and technology advancements, and providing new perspectives in evaluating and optimising the extraction of unconventional resources.

With Australia hosting global energy stakeholders, NERA says that this year the conference seeks to address the “big question on how industry can continue meet world energy demands while transforming the energy market and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon world”.

And NERA has selected 15 national innovators to present their technologies as part of the conference, connecting industry stakeholders with solution providers to create opportunities for collaboration and innovation that can improve the global competitiveness and sustainability of Australia’s energy resources sector.

NERA CEO Miranda Taylor said the technology showcase at URTeC was all about helping technology innovators connect with end-users to ensure innovative products and solutions can be deployed at speed, helping to create sector-wide transformational change and the development of a smart, high value, digital and export-focussed supply chain.

“NERA’s focus is on the transformation of the energy resources sector which isn’t constrained by a commodity or one industry sector focus. Instead, it’s about rapidly discovering, adapting and adopting innovative technologies from wherever there are capabilities — technologies that can pull our industry forward towards a resilient, clean, diverse and affordable energy future.

“NERA’s support for industry collaboration to deploy these technologies is ensuring Australia remains at the global forefront of this transformation.”

As part of URTeC, NERA will also mark its partnership with Deployment Matters to deliver an Australian portal to the Technology Catalogue — an online platform that connects technology suppliers and end-users to solve oil and gas challenges and rapidly deploy technologies.

NERA says the portal is focussed on connecting operators and technology end-users with the solutions they need, recognising the challenges many Australian operators and technology end-users have when searching for and comparing available solutions, and the challenges many Australian technology suppliers have deploying their technology.

Developed based on specific input received from eight Australian operators, NERA says the portal allows operators to easily select the right technologies from Australian and international suppliers to address specific business challenges/opportunities - and conversely, the portal allows technology suppliers to showcase and prove their technology solutions, helping them bring their technology to market.
