Over half of IT & telecommunications employers will give their staff a pay rise of less than 3% in their next review while 8% will not increase salaries at all, according to a newly released 2018-19 salary guide from one national recruitment firm.

According to the salary guide from recruitment firm Hays, a  further 32% will increase salaries between 3% to 6%, while 8% will raise them by 6% or more.

Hays says that compared to their last review, when 14%  of IT & telecommunications employers gave no increases and 12% increased by 6% or above, the findings show that more professionals will receive an increase, but fewer will receive a raise at the higher level of 6% and above.

But despite this, according to Hays, the IT & telecommunications industry remains more generous than most. On average and across all industries, 18% of employers will give staff an increase of 3 to 6% and just 6% will increase by 6% or more.

Across the board in all industries Hays latest index shows that over the coming year, 53% of employers expect to increase permanent IT staff levels and 33% expect to increase their use of temporary and contract IT staff.

According to the salary guide, 35% of organisations now employ temporary and contract staff in their IT department on a regular ongoing basis – and another 44% employ them for special projects or workloads.

Hays notes that given vacancy activity, hotspots of skills in demand are emerging.

The recruitment firm says that demand will be high for Business Analysts with broad experience in business system transformation and Project Managers with digital exposure.

And, Business Intelligence Analysis and Data Analysis professionals, particularly Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Data Analysts with experience in SQL and Tableau, are sought to assist organisations in exploiting their big data.

Hays also notes that organisations are seeking to make more informed business decisions through better utilisation of their data, and says that as organisations adapt to new technologies and business processes the demand for experienced Change Managers will remain high.

Hays also reports that:

  • Cloud Engineers with higher level AWS and Azure experience are in demand, particularly as more organisations move to cloud based solutions.
  • System Operator Engineers, System Architects, Infrastructure Engineers and System Reliability Engineers are replacing traditional infrastructure roles as organisations are pushing for quick builds and deployment. This trend will increase as more infrastructure professionals upskill in automation and DevOps.
  • Cyber Security professionals with an elastic skill-set across all CSIRT functions, penetration testing and information security will be needed, particularly as regulations tighten and in response to the General Data Protection Regulation.

And Hays concludes that organisations continually shifting their focus to meet changing consumer expectations, with UX/UI Designers and Service Designers in high demand.
