HP 7610 - A3, multi-function inkjet – Review

Despite supposedly paperless offices, every office needs an A3 printer. HP’s aptly named OfficeJet 7610 at $299 is a class-leading contender.

It is no beauty, in fact it has a large footprint to accommodate A3 scans and printing, so dedicate some serious office space for the new printer with the dimension (625.2 (w) x 486.5 (h) x 297 (d) mm) and 16.2kg.

HP 7610 (CR769A)

Setup: Unwrap, turn on, and use - Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB to connect. Install the software (CD provided or download) and all features are available.

Printing: An office printer that uses plain bond paper. It is not a glossy photo printer. Adequate for Excel spreadsheets, Word documents and basic poster graphics. Large, multi-megabyte, page size images will slow it down.

  • Paper Size/Weight: From A6 up A3 (297x420) on 60-105 g/m2 (this is paper – not a photographic card stock printer)
  • Duplex print is a $79 option and for CSR reasons should be encouraged
  • Borderless printing to A3 – good for office charts
  • 15 x A3 pages per minute (PPM) in mono (equivalent to 30 for A4 so it is no slouch) and 8 per minute in colour.

Rating: 8 out of 10 for office quality printing

Scanner: A 35 page, single sided, auto document feeder for A4 only. Flatbed for up to A3 (maximum scan width is 279mm so it trims 10mm from each size of the 297mm page). Scans to email and files, etc.

Rating: 6 out of 10 – functionally fine except cannot scan full A3 width. Not a double-sided scanner – these are becoming more useful since duplex printing (a $79 option) became fashionable.

Copier: A competent, 25-400% zoom copier with draft, text, and colour resolution settings.

Fax: mono or colour, 4PM fax, 100 page memory and 110-speed dial.

Mobility: HP ePrint and Apple AirPrint

Memory: 256MB ram and USB flash drive compatibility

Connectivity: Wi-Fi N, Ethernet, USB 2, and phone line.

Operating systems: Windows or OSX

Operating panel: A 6.7cm LCD touch screen – resistive, so you can use a pen instead of fingers

Duty Cycle: 200 to 800 pages per month but has a theoretical 12,000 per month duty cycle.

Energy Star: 2.0 rated

Ink cost and accessories:

HP 932XL - CN053AA – 1000 pages - black $54

HP 933XL - CN054AA – 825 pages - cyan $27

HP 933XL - CN055AA – 825 pages - magenta $27

HP 933XL - CN056AA – 825 pages - yellow $27

Based on standard test the A4 page price is about 15.2 cents (double for A3) – typical of most HP Officejets.

It is a competent, $299 (what more can you ask for at that price?), A3, multi-function, inkjet. Except for the slight side trim in scanning (or copying) it does exactly what it promises. It appears well made, robust enough for small office or workgroup use that needs occasional A3.

Print quality is typical of an OfficeJet – competent on bond paper but not near near laser quality even on its best setting. You get what you pay for – a competent all round, A3 printer.

Its competition is the Brother MFC-J6710 ($299) and Epson WorkForce 7520 ($255) although the choices widen if you don’t want fax or Wi-Fi. In its class – the best option.
