Steve Vamos has announced that he will step down from Telstra's board at the company's AGM in October.

Earlier this year, Vamos took on the role of chief executive of cloud accounting provider Xero.

"Xero is a growing company and following his appointment as chief executive Steve has made the decision to narrow the range of his other commitments," said Telstra chairman John Mullen.

"On behalf of the board, I thank Steve for his valued contribution over the nine years he has served as a director."

Vamos has had a prominent career in the Australian IT industry. After 14 years at IBM he went on to become ANZ managing director at Apple, chief executive of Ninemsn, and ANZ managing director at Microsoft, before moving to the US as vice-president of Microsoft's online services group.

Since returning to Australia, he has at various times been a non-executive director of Medibank, David Jones, Fletcher Building, and Telstra, and for just over a year served as chairman of Divvy Parking.
