Kiwi 'Internet Luminary' Keith Davidson appointed to ISOC board

InternetNZ has announced that Wellington-based 'Internet Luminary' Keith Davidson has been elected to the 12 member board of the Internet Society (ISOC), having been co-chair of ISOC's Advisory Council for the past two years.

He will take up the role in August but will continue to head InternetNZ's international work and relationships. InternetNZ CEO, Vikram Kumar, said his experience in global Internet governance and technical and public policy would be of huge benefit to the ISOC board.

"ISOC's vision of the Internet 'available to everyone' is dear to Keith's heart. We know that he will work tirelessly to help realise that vision and wish him all the best in his new role," he said.

According to InternetNZ, "Davidson brings a fine Internet pedigree to his board role. From relatively humble beginnings as the owner of a Wairarapa-based ISP he began involving himself in local Internet governance. In the 2000s he rose to become chairman of InternetNZ (2000 – 2004) and later (2006 – 2009) served as its executive director.

"Keith also serves a number of international roles including governance positions within ICANN and APTLD (the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (a collaboration of ccTLD operators like .nz). He...also...serves on the organising committee for the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Forum. Over the past decade, he has established himself as one of the world's foremost specialists on Internet governance."

Davidson was one of two new members voted onto the board in the 'organisation' category from a field of six candidates. The other was David Farber, the Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He previously served on ISOC's board from 1993-199.

Participation in the election was modest. Only 52 of the 109 organisation members voted. They could vote for up to two candidates, with votes weighted by the class of membership. In the previous election the vote participation was similar, 50.47 percent, on a group size of 107 organisations.
