The Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull has announced the appointment of Shetler, who takes up the job from his most recent role in the UK Government's digital service. Prior to that he was the Chief Digital Officer for the UK Ministry of Justice.
Turnbull launched the new office yesterday as an agency within the Department of Communications.
Shetler has been appointed for four years following an extensive international search by the government.
Before joining the UK Government in 2014 he worked with a number of digital startups, and was worldwide CTO for banking at Oracle after heading product development at interbank clearing house SWIFT. He was also head of Microsoft’s financial services industry practice.
Shetler has attracted widespread international media coverage for his work as a gay rights activist, including during his time at Oracle when he organised a mass gay rights flash mob outside a London pub.
