Ben Sand joining muru-D as entrepreneur in residence

By

The Telstra-backed start-up accelerator muru-D has brought in Australian start-up entrepreneur, Ben Sand, to take up the role of entrepreneur in residence.

Sand is relocating to Sydney from San Francisco where he raised US$73 million in venture capital and co-founded a company to build a holographic computer and was involved in an accelerator-programme through Y Combinator where he helped raise a Series A round of venture capital worth US$23 million for augmented reality headset company, Meta.

Sand was recruited to muru-D after a worldwide search and replaces Mick Liubinskas, who will relocate to Silicon Valley to help muru-D forge closer ties with the US ecosystem.

Annie Parker, co-founder of muru-D, says Sand’s extensive experience in the start-up scene in Australia and the US makes him the perfect fit. “As someone who spent years building a company in Sydney and went on to graduate from one of the world’s leading accelerator program, he can completely empathise with the muru-D recruits and help them reach the highest levels.”

Sand says technology start-ups on Australia’s national agenda are very encouraging. “We still have a long way to go, but at least we are now heading in the right direction. I chose muru-D as it’s a special kind of accelerator. I have never seen a programme that sustains such a high level of hands-on support for a six-month period. The start-ups in the programme right now are very promising.”
