SUSE, Dell in cloud deal

SUSE Linux and Dell have struck a deal to offer cloud software from the former on hardware supplied by the latter, a media release says.

The solution is meant for businesses who want to run their own private cloud. SUSE uses OpenStack, an open source project that provides cloud software, as the base for its SUSE Cloud application.

The integration between OpenStack and a Dell product known as Crowbar enables quick deployment, management and administration of the physical cloud infrastructure.

The hardware that Dell supplies is its PowerEdge servers. And businesses that use SUSE Cloud can use the largest set of certified third-party applications that run on Linux.

These applications are also certified to run on all Dell hardware.

Along with this announcement, SUSE also said it was now offering basic and priority support for running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on Windows Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform. SUSE is also offering support for openSUSE 12.3 on Azure.
