Play with big data in MapR's Hadoop sandbox

By

MapR has released a virtual appliance to simplify the use of Hadoop for training, development and testing. It's called the MapR Sandbox for Hadoop.

Virtual appliances make the installation of a software system quick and easy, allowing users to get down to work with minimum effort.

If you just want to learn how to use Hadoop, you don't necessarily want start by learning how to install and set up all of its components. And typically your sysadmins will have more pressing tasks to do.

So MapR has released a virtual appliance containing the company's distribution of Hadoop. Officials say it can be up and running within five minutes.

MapR Sandbox for Hadoop also includes a set of tutorials for developers, analysts, and administrators.

It is available for use with VMware or Oracle VirtualBox.

"Organisations face a shortage of Hadoop developers and data scientists, and without useful and easily-accessible training tools, productive Hadoop developers will continue to be in short supply," said MapR vice president of product management Tomer Shiran.

"With the MapR Sandbox, developers have all the tools they need in a convenient and free package to get up to speed on Hadoop quickly."

Earlier this week MapR announced its newest Hadoop distribution.
