11 million spoonfuls of SugarCRM

By

SugarCRM Community Edition (the free version of the open source CRM package) has been downloaded 11 million times so far, with downloads running at around one per minute during the second quarter of 2012.

This makes it the most popular CRM project on SourceForge, company officials claimed.

Despite those millions of downloads, SugarCRM (the company) only claims 80,000 organisations are using the Community Edition, with an unspecified number using a commercial edition.

An advantage of SugarCRM is that organisations can modify the program to meet their exact needs.

The company hosts shared developments as well as commercial extensions and complementary applications.

Australia's InsightfulCRM is one of the members of SugarCRM's Open+ partner program.

"We're seeing SugarCRM CE generate a lot of awareness amongst IT professionals, which often leads to positive referrals to decision-makers in the business," said director of consulting Marc Englaro.

"For many businesses, SugarCRM's freemium model often serves as a stepping stone to its commercial product suite.

"Because of SugarCRM's open source roots, we can easily adjust code and create integrations to meet very specific customer needs."
