PlexNet adds Nyansa to arsenal

Application, network and infrastructure testing and analysis specialist PlexNet has added network analytics provider Nyansa to its roster of partners.

PlexNet already supplies and uses a range of troubleshooting and monitoring tools covering hardware and software, and wired and wireless networks, business development director Sergio Ferreira told iTWire.

But Nyansa's Voyance goes further by providing an overview of the situation along with recommended actions to address the issues detected.

Customers see it as a unique toolset, he claimed.

Wireless networks are increasingly considered business critical, said PlexNet sales and technical services director Dom Fitzgibbon.

For example, some government departments require good connectivity throughout their premises, even while people are moving around the building, and "wireless is massively important for the big universities" where it is commonplace for students to carry a laptop, an iPad and an iPhone, he said.

People are starting to realise that traditional tools from network vendors are more about setting up a network rather than subsequent troubleshooting, Fitzgibbon said. Voyance is claimed to fill that gap.

As budgets are limited, it is important to make the right decisions. If a wireless network seems to be overloaded, it is tempting to think in terms of adding access points or upgrading the controllers, but it is possible that such measures won't have the desired effect, he explained.

"You've got to understand where the problems lie," and Voyance could suggest what needs to be done, said Ferreira.

"It's not just about Wi-Fi," he said, Voyance collects information about the network (both local and wide area), operating systems, applications, devices and so on, and uses it to help determine the cause of a problem experienced by a user.

People who have been using all sorts of tools to assist in this process can see how Voyance can make a difference, he said.

Various tools claim to give easy root cause analysis but fail to deliver, according to Fitzgibbon. It is really about ruling out factors that are not part of the problem, and "Nyansa has a very good way of breaking that down".

This approach to fault domain isolation saves a lot of time in the field, he said. For instance, it might home in from a wireless LAN problem to a particular access point and perhaps to a specific user.

Since Voyance is sold on subscription and delivered as SaaS, it is flexible, cost effective and scalable, said Ferreira. Existing local users include a major university.
