Second-gen iPhone SE arriving this month

By

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple's latest iPhone is going on sale this month.

The second-generation iPhone SE goes on sale this Friday (17 April), and will be available for purchase from Apple, authorised resellers and carriers a week later (Friday 24 April).

One caveat is that the latter date applies "in the US and more than 40 other countries and regions." Apple's announcement did not specify whether Australia is one of those countries, but previous practice suggests that is a safe assumption.

The new iPhone SE, described as "the most affordable iPhone", has a starting price of $749.

That gets you a 4.7in Retina HD display, Touch ID, haptic touch, the A13 Bionic (as used in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, this is "the fastest chip in a smartphone," according to Apple), IP67 dust and water resistance, and "the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone" (12MP, f/1.8, 4K video at up to 60fps) with computational photography capabilities thanks to the A13 Bionic, along with stereo audio recording and cinematic video stabilisation on the front and rear cameras.

Other features include a new aluminium and glass design, fast charging (up to 50 per cent charge in 30 minutes), support for Qi-certified chargers, Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit-class LTE, dual SIM operation via eSIM , and yes, the Lightning connector is still there.

The new iPhone SE will be available in black, white and red, with a portion of the proceeds from the red model going to Global Fund's COVID-19 response fund and towards HIV/AIDS grants.

The $749 price tag applies to the 64GB version. The 128GB model is $829, and the 256GB variant comes in just under a grand ($999).

"The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way — including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos — while still being very affordable," said Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller.

"iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can't wait to get iPhone SE into customers' hands."
