Panasonic announces new Toughbook CF-53

Toughbook is practically a synonym for ruggedised laptop. The owner of the Toughbook moniker, Panasonic, has released a new semi-rugged Toughbook, the CF-53 that they claim delivers desktop computing for mobile workers where a standard commercial-grade laptop does not provide sufficient durability.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 supersedes the Toughbook CF-52. This latest model is drop-resistant, spill-resistant and is tested to nine MIL-STD-810G tests.

Panasonic claims that The 2.6 kilogram body delivers up to 10 hours of battery life. It is powered by a second generation Intel CoreTM i5-2520M vProTM processor and supports 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and optional 3G mobile broadband. It ships with 4GB of RAM that can be expanded to a maximum of 8GB.

The Toughbook CF-53 is pitched at professsionals in industries such as telecommunications, automotive diagnostics, engineering and surveying who need a unit that offers desktop-like performance as well as rugged strength, wireless connectivity and lightweight mobility.

It has a 1366 x 768 14-inch LED LCD screen for easy viewing in the office or workshop. Panasonic has also increased the size of the touchpad by 25% over its predeccessor while offering multi-touch functionality with zoom and scroll capabilities. Panasonic also offers an optional 1,000 nit sunlight-viewable touch screen for users who expect to spend more time in bright outdoor conditions.

The Toughbook CF-53 also offers options including an adjustable backlit keyboard, an integrated webcam, Fingerprint and SmartCard Readers, FireWire and a second LAN port.

The Toughbook CF-53 has a Magnesium Alloy chassis that is designed to survive 76 centimetre drops on six faces and features a spill-resistant keyboard. It is tested to nine MIL-STD-810G tests including drop, shock, vibration, dust, altitude, temperature shock, high/low temperature and humidity. A shock-mounted, quick-release hard drive provides extra data security.
