OPPO R9s world’s largest selling Android smartphone

By

OPPO’s mid-range, fully featured R9s and Plus sold 8.9 million units — 2.5% of all purchases — in Q1, 2017, ahead of Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy J3 and J5 models.

That is according to Strategy Analytics Smartphone Model Tracker which also revealed that the iPhone 7 sold 21.5m units and the iPhone 7 Plus sold 17.4 million units – between them 11% of all handsets sold in Q1.

Two years ago OPPO was relatively unheard of and since then it, and its and siblings vivo and OnePlus (all owned by BBK) produce more smartphones than any other Chinese maker appealing to both the domestic and export markets.

Michael Tran, executive director, OPPO Australia, said, “The fact we’re the number one selling Android smartphone in Q1 2017 is a phenomenal achievement for the company.

"OPPO isn’t operating in as many markets as other smartphone manufacturers, so the fact we’ve captured 2.5% of the global market with the R9s goes to show the premium quality handset is in huge demand in the countries we are in.

“Australia is one of those countries and we’ve seen huge demand for the R9s/Plus within our retail partners. This is due to the fact it provides a premium quality look and feel, whilst offering features typically associated with flagship smartphones, for an affordable price.”

iTWire has reviewed both the 5.5” super AMOLED R9s and 6” super AMOLED R9s Plus.

Flagship phones account for less than 10% of volume sold and many consumers are now opting for outright purchase of mid-range, mid-priced, devices as opposed to telco plans.
