OPPO and JB Hi-Fi team up - R9 on sale from 9 May Featured

Rapidly growing Chinese smartphone maker OPPO lost its Australia wide retail outlet when Dick Smith closed its doors. Despite this it still managed to claim a ‘top five’ Android market share position in Australia.

OPPO has signed a national retail agreement with JB Hi-Fi. The deal will see Australia’s largest home entertainment retailer stock all OPPO devices nationwide, including its much anticipated R9 and R9 Plus devices announced at a global launch event last month.

OPPO has enjoyed strong growth both in Australia and overseas achieving a record 50 million smartphone sales worldwide in 2015. This was followed by the launch of the R9, which sold more than 400,000 devices within the first four days of launching in China.

Michael Tran, CMO believes that the partnership with JB Hi-Fi will help emulate that success by elevating the OPPO brand in Australia.

“As a relatively new brand to the Australian market, we’re extremely pleased with the progress we’ve made to date. We know from customer feedback that when Aussies experience our products, they fall in love with them. Our partnership with JB Hi-Fi will help us get into the hands of Aussies nationwide, which is very important in building our brand.

In addition to its range of smartphones, JB Hi-Fi will also stock OPPO accessories including phone covers, cases and VOOC flash chargers both for the home and car.

“It was important for us that the OPPO experience didn’t start and stop with the device,” added Tran. “OPPO has built a reputation for introducing innovative new technologies, such as its VOOC fast charger, which gives two hours of talk time in just five minutes of charging, so we wanted to offer the full ecosystem of current and future accessories.”

OPPO devices including the R7s, R7 Plus, F1 and R9 will be introduced to JB Hi-Fi stores from May9th, 2016. The R9 Plus will be introduced in June.

The Stylish OPPO R9 hits the shelves Australia wide – read on.

The 5.5” R9 and 6” R9 Plus shares the same design cues as the R7 series that sold 15 million handsets in 2015. iTWire has a first looks article with more specifications here. The conclusion is a flagship contender without the price tag!

The R9 improves on all of the R7 specifications. Key features include:

  • 16 MP front-facing Hi-Light Camera: The R9’s unique strength in front-facing shots lies in its special sensor, which arranges pixels in a special pattern designed to maximise image quality, resulting in photos that are clear, bright and strikingly rich in colour
  • Lightning-fast fingerprint recognition: The R9 is OPPO’s first phone to use front-facing fingerprint recognition. It’s able to recognise fingerprints (even when wet) to unlock the phone in only 0.2 seconds.
  • VOOC Flash Charge: The R9 is equipped with OPPO’s patented low-voltage VOOC Flash Charge, allowing it to achieve a 75% charge in half an hour. VOOC never puts the phone’s internals at risk with excessive heat, and allows users to continue to use their phone freely while flash charging, a feature that competitors can’t offer
  • Similar on specs to many flagship devices on the market, the OPPO R9 will retail at a fraction of the price, $599.

The OPPO R9 will be available for purchase through JB-Hi-Fi and from May 9th, 2016.
