Larger Kindle expected this week

By
Observers expect Amazon’s press conference scheduled for Wednesday in New York to see the introduction of a larger-size Kindle suitable for magazine and newspaper reading.

The press conference will be held at Pace University, site of the New York Times's nineteenth-century headquarters, and will reportedly feature an appearance by Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the Times's publisher.

Coincidentally -- or not -- the Times is rumored to be one of Amazon's partners in introducing a larger Kindle.

At a time when U.S. newspaper revenue is collapsing, widely attributed to readers' preference for getting the news for free on the Web, a larger Kindle is widely seen as a possible lifeline for the industry.

The current Kindle, even with only a 6-inch screen, already has attracted paying subscribers to the Times, the Wall Street Journal, and other newspapers and magazines.

The new device is expected to have a screen size about as big as a standard sheet of paper.

Amazon is not the only manufacturer presumed to be interested in a larger-format e-reader.

In April, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch praised the Kindle and alluded to an investment by News Corp in a larger, full-color device.

There's no indication of who would manufacture such a device: all the other prominent e-readers are black and white, like the Kindle.

Plastic Logic , for example, is planning to have a pilot version of their reader out in the second half of this year. It will supposedly have an 8.5-x-11-inch screen but be much thinner than the Kindle -- but it'll still be black and white.

The Hearst Corporation is also rumored to be working on a newspaper-oriented e-reader.

And the elephant in the room, of course, is Apple, with its anticipated bigger-than-an-iPod touchscreen mobile device.

Such a device would have a color display suitable for video, but its screen is not expected to be as large as that of a dedicated e-reader.
