HTC’s water resistant Desire Eye goes JB Hi-Fi - exclusively

If you’re interested in buying HTC’s Desire Eye with 13 megapixel camera on both sides, there will be only one place to get it in Australia - consumer electronics superstore JB Hi-Fi.

HTC has has done an exclusive deal to sell the presumably network unlocked HTC Desire Eye in ‘Coral Red’ at JB Hi-Fi for $799.

You can see the Desire Eye here, which is in the ‘outright’ section of JB’s website, with phones sold outright usually always unlocked and able to work on any network.

The camera on the front is much larger than that of most smartphones, looking identical to the one on the back of the Desire Eye, which is unsurprising as they are both identical 13 megapixel cameras.

Dual LED flashes with the ‘true tone’ dual colours adorn both sides as well, potentially making this the first smartphone with a flash on the front as well as the back, too - I’ve certainly never seen a smartphone with a flash on the front.

This makes it the ultimate ‘selfie phone’, and you can reportedly even record from both sides at the same time so you can see yourself as you film something else - which is something Samsung smartphones have been able to do since the Galaxy S4.

Boomsound speakers are included, which is one of HTC’s signature additions, and you get the usual HTC extras of Zoe for creative video editing, BlinkFeed for smooth social network notifications and HTC’s well regarded UI, HTC Sense 6.0.

Make group video calls and you even get face tracking, which is impressive, as is the fact this phone also comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor running at 2.3GHz.

You get Android Kitkat 4.4.4, which is the latest pre-Lollipop 5.0 release, and while there’s no word on when this model with get Lollipop, it will surely arrive relatively early sometime next year.

The phone is listed as “IP57 and IPx7 Rated” meaning it is dustproof and water resistant up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes.

The display is a 1920x1080p 5.2-inch HD display.

Inside is 16GB storage, 2GB of Ram and a microSD slot able to take cards up to 128GB in size.

So, if you’ve chosen the Android side of the force and want what is arguably the most versatile camera-equipped Android, even though others come with 20 megapixel cameras that can take 4K video but don’t have anywhere near a 13-megapixel front facing camera… the HTC Desire Eye from JB Hi-Fi is one you might want to cast your eye over!
