As a Windows 10 Mobile (W10M) smartphone it is the leader of the [small but growing] pack with the latest 6” QHD AMOLED screen; Qualcomm Snapdragon 820; 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, up to 2TB micro-SD; 4150mAH battery, quick and wireless charging; 16MP/8MP rear/front camera; B&O speakers; dual SIM and many LTE bands; and iris scanning for Windows Hello and payment systems.
Like most enterprise standard HP Elite products, it is MIL-STD-810G rated and has IP67 water and dust resistance. Let me back up and make one thing very clear – it is for enterprise use, has enterprise standard security, and will be priced accordingly.
“Commercial mobility is prime for disruption, and has never seen innovation at this scale,” said Dion Weisler, president and chief executive officer, HP Inc. “The HP Elite x3 is a revolutionary mobile platform that enables mobility and computing to come together in a truly meaningful way. Together with the strength of our partners, we’re propelling the industry forward and turning the promise of mobile productivity into a reality for customers.”
Now for the beginnings of its ecosystem.
Using W10M Continuum and USB-C it can connect via a dock or wirelessly to an external screen, keyboard and mouse, and support a full range of USB devices (it uses W10 drivers) - effectively it is a powerful computer that fits in your pocket.
I have been using Continuum on a Lumia 950XL and, for the most part, is can replace a desktop computer as long as you have suitable ‘Universal’ apps. Microsoft Office 365 is one of these, and a growing number of W10 apps are too. HP are also working on HP Workspace - it creates a virtual PC, giving users access to company curated catalogues of virtualised x86 apps. One such app is Salesforce.
"Speed is the new currency of business, compelling every company to empower its users with the tools to run their businesses anytime, anywhere and on any device," said Marc Benioff, chairman and chief executive office, Salesforce. “We’re proud to work with partners like HP and Microsoft to put the power of Salesforce1 and the world's #1 CRM platform in the hands of every mobile user.”
HP offer a Continuum Desk Dock with DisplayPort, 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB-C, and Ethernet – just add the peripherals – it will charge the phone too.
It also offers a Mobile Extender – basically a 1kg, 12.5” notebook sans computer that wirelessly connects to the x3.
Later it will implement more add-on devices including a portable OfficeJet 200 Mobile printer and OfficeJet 250 mobile all-in-one printer for users who need to print, scan and copy on-the-go, improving productivity with the 10-page Auto Document Feeder (ADF) and also enabling easy wireless printing using Bluetooth Smart technology and Wi-Fi Direct. Both printers include a built-in replaceable battery and power adaptor, and support charging from AC and USB.
It is 100% reliable and a good desktop replacement if it meets your needs.
