Google goes for a re-Play

Google just announced a "fresh new look" for Google Play, furthering its new focus on entertainment for its Android tablets and smartphones.

Detractors of Google's popular Android ecosystem used to constantly point to Apple's App Store as being superior and having a much more fruitful offering, however this has been a thing of the past for a while now with Google offering more apps than Apple and a similar range of TV shows, movies and books.

Google today upgraded its Play Store to give it a slightly cleaner and more colourful look, although the full rollout process will take a few weeks.

“The new design focuses on bigger images that jump off the page, Google said in a blog post today.

"Similarly themed content is grouped together so you can hone in on a magazine to read or an app to try. As you move down the page, new recommendations continue to appear so there is always more to see and explore. We’ve also simplified purchasing so you can breeze through checkout and get to enjoying your movie rental or other content.”

The new Google Play store app is rolling out on Android 2.2 and above devices starting today although most users will receive the update in coming weeks.
