Approximately $1.1 billion is spent annually on fashion in Australia on mobile devices, while $1 billion is spent annually on electronics via mobile.
The research, conducted by Nielsen and Stokes Mischewski, found that one in five (22 per cent) of Australians are shopping on mobile devices this Christmas season, and for good reason.
Among smartphone and tablet users, just under half (45 per cent) believe mobile shopping will give them an advantage over other shoppers this year, with at least 62 per cent of smartphone/tablet users having researched products online using their device.
With the general rise in mobile shopping well documented, the eBay research provides in-depth data on a topic that has dominated the retail landscape and is predicted to for years to come.
Key findings from the 2012 eBay Mobile Shopping Study:
- 31 per cent who owned a smartphone/tablet last year are using their device more to research Christmas gifts this year 62 per cent of smartphone/tablet users have researched products online using the device, compared to 57 per cent in 2011
- 37% of smartphone/tablet users have purchased products online using the device
- Gen Y (74 per cent) smartphone/tablet users are most likely to have researched products online using their device compared to Gen X (62%) and Baby Boomers (49%)
- One in three (32 per cent) agree that mobile devices make shopping in store better
- 36 per cent of Christmas shoppers expecting to use their smartphones to research prices before buying.
Mobile commerce is clearly on the rise, and with the introduction of Mastercard and Visa compatible NFC chips in popular Android phones, this is only set to continue.
