Devs gear up for BlackBerry 10 imminent launch Featured

By

BlackBerry 10 is set for launch this week, and RIM is already spruiking the support it's getting from enterprise developers.

BlackBerry company Research In Motion says that Cisco, SAP, Box, Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, Truphone, and BigHand will be among the software vendors offering apps for BlackBerry 10 when it is launched on January 30 (US time).

The company has been working hard to attract developers to BlackBerry 10, which some see as the 'last chance saloon' for RIM.

In addition to revamping its developer alliance program (renamed BlackBerry Partners for Enterprise), RIM ran an 11-city tour to help developers and partners create apps for (or port existing ones to) BlackBerry 10.

"BlackBerry 10 changes the game – while the platform conforms to modern standards and is easy to adopt, the applications can integrate with the mobile operating system and with other applications in entirely new ways," said Adam Linford, head of Truphone Labs.

"This has provided Truphone with the opportunity to rethink how we approach mobile VoIP applications, and open up new avenues for development in the future," he added.

Tens of thousands of apps have apparently been submitted for inclusion in BlackBerry World (RIM's app store), and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has been reported as saying that the target was for 100,000 apps to be available on launch day.

We'll soon see if that was achieved.

BlackBerry 10 was originally expected in late 2012, but in mid-2012 that was pushed back to the first quarter of 2013 before RIM committed to a January 30 launch.
