Chinese smartphone companies increased their share of the European market in 2018 even as the total shipments to Europe for the calendar year fell 4% to 197 million units.

Data from analyst firm Canalys showed that for the final quarter of 2018, shipments to Europe fell 2% to 57 million.

Samsung remained the largest vendor to the area in 2018 with 61.6 million units but this was down more than 10% year-on-year. Apple clung to second spot with 42.8 million units shipped but this again was down, this time by 6%.

On the other hand, Chinese vendors Huawei and Xiaomi grew strongly while HMD Global grew for the last quarter, but fell back by 18.3% for the year. Huawei increased its shipments for the year by 55% to 42.5 million units.

"The political situation between Chinese companies and the US Government has benefitted European consumers," said Canalys senior analyst Ben Stanton.

"The US administration is causing Chinese companies to invest in Europe over the US.

"The European market is mature, and replacement rates have lengthened, but there is an opportunity for Chinese brands to displace the market incumbents.

"The likes of Huawei and Xiaomi bring price competition that has stunned their rivals as they use their size against the smaller brands in Europe."
