Apple Watch - price speculation, golden opportunity

Apple’s Watch will use gold intelligently to create a stronger gold casing while crafting the ultimate must-have item for the world’s luxury watch lovers.

Want to know how to watch the Apple Watch launch on 9 March 2015 at 10am in San Francisco, which is a very early 4am in Australia on 10 March 2015?

Then you’ve come to the right place, for my article on the topic is here - but you will need an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or iOS 6.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 5.1.10 on OS X 10.6.8 or later, or a 2nd- or 3rd-gen Apple TV to watch the stream live.

Everyone else will either have to follow the live blogs or wait until later in the day when Apple will post a replay of the launch, or someone will post it to YouTube.

But what of the expected Apple Watch pricing - and what of reports that Apple is going to corner the world’s gold market?

Well, on the latter, iTWire Editor Stan Beer has written an excellent article entitled ‘The United States of Apple aims to corner the world gold market’, which you should definitely read for spot on insight and analysis.

Stan goes on to explain that Apple could be in the market for 750 tonnes of gold per year, putting in the same league as countries such as China, India and Russia importing similar quantities of gold.

Some say this is a hedge against America’s paper money, now $18 trillion in the hole, and more akin to green toilet paper than ever. If the US dollar ever crashes, Apple having a nice stash of gold will surely come in handy - especially if Apple doesn’t sell the million-plus 18-karat gold watches a month some analysts have suggested it is aiming for.

There’s also that fascinating article from Dr Drang at Leancrew which notes that Apple’s 18k gold watch will have, ‘on a volume basis’, less gold than regular 18k gold - while still being up to twice as hard as regular gold.

The link comes courtesy of John Gruber from Daring Fireball, whose equally must-read article ‘Apple Watch Prelude’ makes clever guesstimations over the pricing Apple is set to unveil this week at its ‘Spring Forward’ launch.

Gruber expects prices for the Apple Watch Sport edition to be US$349 for the 38mm model and a slightly higher US$399 price for the 42mm model.

He expects the regular Apple Watch with Sapphire Glass to start at US$749 and US$799 depending on size, with prices going up depending on the band you choose.

Gruber expects the Apple Watch Edition model to start from US$7499 and go to $10,999, although some in the industry have speculated the watch might cost as much as $20,000.

We’ll know for certain what the price structure will be in less than a couple of days' time as I write, but we already know when those in the US can expect Apple Watch deliveries to start thanks to Tim Cook himself, who said shipments will start in April.

Sadly, this does not mean Apple Watch will also arrive in April for Australians, with the US site saying ‘Coming Early 2015’ but the Australian Apple site still saying ‘Available in 2015’.

With any luck, Australian availability (and that of other countries) will be officially announced this week, and hopefully, it won’t be too long after the first set of countries can expect its arrival.

All of this, of course, leads me to the golden opportunity of yet again reworking Shirley Bassey’s classic James Bond title song, GoldFinger.

I originally did this for the launch of the golden iPhone 5S, where I transformed GoldFinger into GoldRinger, as you can see here

But with the Apple Watch in gold set to be the ultimate golden blinger, I naturally put my artistic talents to good use once again in the quest to deliver a new version of GoldFinger, which I have dubbed GoldBlinger.

You can watch the original GoldFinger lyrics here, and sing along with the new words below - and if you're of keen mind, you'll see I've assigned Apple Watch both genders for gender equality and lyrical purposes. Just go with it.

GoldBlinger, it’s the watch
The watch with the midas touch
It’s not too much
Such a GoldBlinger
Beckons you to enter its web of win
Apple Watch - are you in?

Golden words you can pour in it’s ear
Let Android bozos make fun and jeer
For the golden watch knows when you’ve worn her
Making your heart sing with Mister GoldBlinger
Pretty girl, prepare for a watch of gold
Your heart is sold

Golden watch it’s the ultimate gear
It’s so good that you will shed a tear
For this golden watch knows when you’ve worn her
It's the apps within from Mister GoldBlinger
Pretty girl, this watch is so very bold
The gold is rolled

She loves only gold
Only gold
He loves gold
He loves only gold
Only gold
She loves gold
