Apple to refresh MacBook Pro

By

With Intel's new Sandy Bridge processor announcements a couple of weeks ago, it's not surprising that Apple is readying an updated range of MacBook Pros to take advantage of the power boost on offer.

Some of Apple's retailers are reporting stock shortages with the MacBook Pro. In particular, the 15-inch and 17-inch form factors seem to be constrained. For example, US customers are finding that some resellers are saying that the lead time for order fulfilment is up to two months.

The larger MacBook Pro models were last refreshed about nine months ago, in April 2010. Although some new built-to-order options, for faster processors were made available in October it's the move to the new Sandy Bridge platform that will give the MacBook Pros a much needed boost as they're looking a little tired next to some of their competition.

It's a fir bet that any new MacBook Pro released in the next three or four months will be ready for OS X Lion - the next version in Apple's line of feline operating systems. However, given the iOS-like features being added to Lion we're left wondering whether a refreshed MacBook Pro might also gain some new features like a touch-enabled display and, if we're really lucky, a Retina Display.
