Chinese smartphone vendor OPPO has released the AX5s which it claims is the best entry-level smartphone on the market, with 13MP + 2 MP dual rear cameras and retailing for $299.

A statement from the company said the AX5s had an 8MP front-facing selfie camera as well as a waterdrop screen, and a near-fullscreen 6.2-inch LCD display, meaning a 89.35% screen-to-body ratio.

“All eyes are on 5G smartphones and we’re proud to be leading that charge,” said OPPO Australia managing director Michael Tran. “While we’re gearing up for a new era of smartphones, we understand flagship devices can often be an expensive purchase and at times a luxury not everyone can afford.

“At the same time, we understand choosing to purchase a sub-$300 smartphone usually means missing out on innovative features consumers actually want. That’s not the case with the AX5s, as we’ve taken many of the innovations found in OPPO’s flagship devices and packed them into our small but powerful new addition.”

The new device has a 4230mAh large-capacity battery and is claimed to be capable of up to 13.5 hours of video playback, thanks to an AI algorithm optimisation and a low power-consumption MTK6765 processor. It has a 2.3GHz CPU and 3GB of RAM.

The AX5s runs on ColorOS 5.2.1 which has a number of new features such as Smart Bar, Smart Scan and video editing

Smart Scan offers features such as the ability to transform paper business cards into electronic versions to streamline professional networking, and document and image translation for overseas travel. Smart Scan also converts images into editable text, allowing users to seamlessly work between formats.

Smart Bar is a productivity tool allowing users to quickly switch between apps, conveniently reply to text messages and transfer files while playing games or watching videos.

Available in red and black, the AX5s will be available from JB Hi-Fi, Telechoice, Yes Distribution and Mobileciti from Tuesday. Optus will sell the device from 29 April.
