The outage began at about 10am on Monday and is affecting both 3G and 4G users. As can be seen on the outage map above from Aussie Outages, all cities are affected.
The issue is impacting some 4G mobile voice and data services nationally, which is also causing congestion for 3G services. We're working to resolve the issue and are investigating the root cause. We're sorry for the inconvenience.— Telstra (@Telstra) May 21, 2018
The company tweeted: "We're aware of the issue impacting our mobile network. Sorry for any inconvenience."
Earlier this month, the company suffered an outage to its triple-zero service after a cable outage between Bowral and Orange in NSW, the cable cut being due to lightning.

Today's outage is unlikely to help the company as it seeks to battle competition from Optus and Vodafone, with the three companies having roughly equal numbers of mobile subscribers.
Some mobile users still retained their sense of humour, despite the frustration.
"There is a strange guy outside my building and I think he is stealing all the data .... I have no evidence to back this claim up whatsoever ..... but he might be a Optus secret service agent trying to tarnish the good name of Telstra .... that has to be it," one user, Troy Vanderpoll, commented on the Aussie Outages forum.
But most were just irritated that the service would not work. "Waiting for an important phone call. Of course the only day I'm in need for my phone Telstra service stuffs up! Might need to look into a different provider and get a prepaid phone," said user Nickala Leonie Douglas on the Aussie Outages forum.
And user Fiona Grayson asked, "Why is this happening and why am I paying a premium for a service that works intermittently?"
